Garden Buzz and Speaker John Clark
Meet our new members and learn about recent added membership benefits. Then hear from Dr. John Clark on the risk of plant extinction and what scientists are doing to save our plants for future generations.
San Diego County has the most bio-diverse ecology in the continental United States. But few are aware that 25% of San Diego’s and 20% of the world’s plants are at risk of becoming extinct due to the threats of development, pests, climate change and fire. Learn how years of drought in California and increased temperatures are making trees like our Torrey Pines more susceptible to loss by pests like the bark beetle.
Dr. Clark leads the Center for Plant Conservation’s (CPC’s) national efforts to save endangered plants through scientific research, applied conservation, and technology innovation. While John’s academic training and background is in basic research, his particular passion is for developing strong collaborations and bringing together world experts in a variety of disciplines to achieve measurable conservation outcomes. He is Director of Plant Collections and Strategy, San Diego Zoo Global and President and CEO, Center for Plant Conservation. CPC shares best practices with conservationists all over the world and advocates for plants and their value to humankind.
